Application of Decanting Centrifuge Used in Drilling Waste Management

For unweighted drilling fluids, a decanter centrifuge is often used on the active mud system ot remove as many drilled solids as possible, which helps to control the weight or density of the mud. The effluent containing colloidal solids, such as bentonite and chemical additives, is returned to the active mud system. If it is an expensive drilling fluids, often the hydrocycone unders can be processed with a centrifuge to recover as much of the associated liquid phase as possible while discharging the solids.

This centrifuge features an elongated cylinder with a conveyor in the center. The cylinder spins at a different velocity, which in turn pushes denser material to the exterior wall. The conveyor then distributes these solids to the opposite end of the centrifuge where it is discharged. Decanter centrifuge is used to separate (dewater) solid materials from liquids in solids control system when they are mixed together in mud.

As decanting centrifuge is highly efficient and effective, there has been little change in the technology regarding centrifuge equipment over the past few decades. The life span of a typical centrifuge ranges from 15 to 25 years depending on the style of the equipment and the quality of the manufacturer.

In the processing of drilling waste management job, as a key drilling waste management equipment, oilfield decanting centrifuge requires a centrifugal force for the separation of the solids from the liquid. This characteristic is dependent on the radius of the centrifuge and its angular rotational speed. G-force is related to the gravitational acceleration and centrifugal acceleration inside the bowl.
