Working Principle of KOSUN Vertical Cutting Dryer

The conical screen basket within the unit rotates, producing an increasing G-force as the cuttings are forced downward and outward of up to 360 times the natural gravitational force (G-Force).  As associated mud separates from the cuttings under the induced gravitational forces within the unit, the openings in the screen (210-500μ) allows recovered fluid to pass through and exit the unit. To this step, the VC has finished its separation task from wet drilling cuttings. Then the recovery mud will further be transferred to high speed decanter centrifuge to be processed again.

Drilling Mud Design Requirement Principles

Drilling mud solids control system is used to store, make up and recycle drilling mud in drilling, which is one of the most important system with drilling systems. Generally, it is composed of drilling mud shale shake, vacuum degasser, cyclone desander, cyclone desilter as well as decanter centrifuge and kinds of piping lines, and mud tank. Cyclone is the main parts of drilling mud solids control desander and desilter. Generally, desander and desilter is mainly composed of cyclones and shaker base. There is one unit called mud cleaner which combines desander and desilter playing the common role of desilter and desander.


Most of the solids control manufacturers are able to produce cyclones in domestic solids control industries. Made of cast iron or PU material, desander and desilter are required to be abrasion resistance and are able to separate solids particles with D50, namely if D 50 is lower, the separation effect of desander and desilter is better. Do pay attention to the problems that separation points between desander and desilter should not be too far or too close. Generally, when the inner diameter is between 150mm and 300mm separation points between 74 and 44 um, it probably is desander. While when the inner diameter is between 100mm and 150mm separation points between 44 and 15um, it probably is desilter.


However, in practical drilling processing, desander and desilter are usually used by mistake on the solids phase diameter separation extent. Drilling mid is processed by desander again processed by desilter, which cause desilter doesn’t play the role of proper separation effect. This is account from the unqualified production level and standard and finally led to unsatisfied separating efficiency.

Base on the above described problem, many purchasers choose 2 drilling mud desander instead of one desander and one desilter. Even some users simply install one desander in the position of desilter installation. This is supposed to be improper practice. If two desanders are used by the same parameters, they should be set in parallel construction in case of emergency circulation. But reasonable assembly solution is one desander and one desilter are installed together with series connection. Above all, desilter and desander should be set with different extent of separation points.
