Status of Oilfeild Drilling Fluid for Drilling Waste Management

In oil exploration and production, a lot of drilling waste would be left in drilling plant. These drilling waste are remaining in drilling plant pool. Due to incomplete processing of solids waste, a lot of rain erosion with leakage cesspool overflow, flooding and so on may cause pollution to groundwater and surface water. Meanwhile it would endanger the surrounding environment, and may even cause pollution accidents. In response to these harmful substances, how to take appropriate drilling waste treatment technology to minimize the environmental impact of waste drilling fluid damage is a very important issue to oil and gas drilling companies currently.


In recent years, although the domestic onshore oil and gas industry has made some efforts to deal with drilling waste management, there is still getting unobvious processing effect. Currently there is a big difference at home and abroad for the waste liquid treatment programs, no matter in technical solutions, equipment, and environmental investment and so on.

As traditional method, majority of domestic drilling companies handle the drilling waste in the waste storage pools by the mean of solidification at the end of the drilling. The specific method is as follow description. Under the reaction of gravity, the drilling waste in the pool is divided into liquid and sewage sludge. 1/3 of the liquid will be directly discharged and the remained 2/3 sewage sludge will be further processed by adding curing agent. This method is characteristic of high water amount and high amount of chemical agent waste. Nevertheless, the processing effect is not ideal or pollution risks can not be completely eliminated.
