Drilling Mud Design Requirement Principles

Drilling mud solids control system is used to store, make up and recycle drilling mud in drilling, which is one of the most important system with drilling systems. Generally, it is composed of drilling mud shale shake, vacuum degasser, cyclone desander, cyclone desilter as well as decanter centrifuge and kinds of piping lines, and mud tank. There are still drilling mud supply device such as jet mud mixer, centrifugal pumps, shear pumps, oil pumps and mud agitator. In addition, aisle, ladder and guard bar are still the necessary device.

In drilling mud design requirement, relative solids control equipment is installed to remove harmful solids phase diameter bigger than 5-15 um and keep the useful solids phase, which is for the purpose of supporting good performance drilling mud for drilling. AS per SY/T6223-2005 requirement, detailed principles are described in the following essay.


1-1.25 times capacity of shale shaker, vacuum degasser, cyclone desander and cyclone desilter should be assured compared with the maximum capacity of drilling mud pump. Also, sand pump and motors are also set under this processing value. 1.05-1.1 times treading capacity should be assured as the maximum treating capacity of the drilling mud capacity.

Usually, mud tank effective volume should be 75% as the its total volume. There are some requirement of mud tank design.
1. Drilling mud tank is able to contain the maximum circulation value of the drilling mud in drilling.
2. According to design of drilling mud flow, overflow port and tube with bottom valve.
3. Whole strength is able to satisfy transfer, hanging as well as apply the drilling mud with 2.5 g/cm3 density drilling mud.
4. Sander discharge hole should be designed for each cabints.
5. All the seal device should be assured as oil resistant seal which suitable for all tye drilling mud.
